Downloading and installing Unity

Download and install the Unity Editor from the Unity download page. The installer uses a Download Assistant and has detailed instructions to follow. If you want to download the Unity Editor using a torrent or install several versions of Unity at once, see Torrent Download, below.

Unity Download Assistant

The Unity Download Assistant is a small executable program (approximately 1 MB in size) which lets you select which components of the Unity Editor you want to download and install.

If you’re not sure which components you want to install, leave the default selections, click Continue, and follow the installer’s instructions.

Note that on PC there is Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015.

Installing Unity without the Download Assistant

If you prefer, you can download and install all of the components separately, without using the Download Assistant. The components are normal installer executable programs and packages, so you may find it simpler, especially if you are a new Unity user, to use the Download Assistant. Some users, such as those wishing to automate deployment of Unity in an organization, may prefer to install from the command line.

Installing Unity on Windows from command line

The following options can be used when installing the Unity Editor and other components from command line on Windows. Note that installer command line arguments are case-sensitive.

Unity Editor install

/SPerforms a silent (no questions asked) install.
/D=PATHSets the default install directory. Useful when combined with the silent install option. Default folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\Unity (32-bit) or C:\Program Files\Unity (64-bit)

Example:

Install Unity silently to the folder E:\Development\Unity, which will be the root of the Unity installation. The Unity editor executable will in this case be installed in E:\Development\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe. “/D” argument must be last and without quotes, even if path contains spaces.

Unity Editor uninstall

To perform a silent uninstall, run Uninstall.exe /S (for example, from command line or a script).

Note that although the process will finish right away, it takes a few seconds before the files are actually removed. The reason for this is that the uninstaller is copied to a temporary location in order to be able to remove itself. Also, make sure the working directory is not inside the Unity install location, as it won’t be able to remove the folder if this is the case.

Standard Assets install

Silently install Standard Assets. If specifying folder, use the Unity “root” folder (that is, the folder containing the Editor folder, and not where Unity.exe is installed into).

Example Project install

Silently install the Example Project. The default folder is C:\Users\Public\Documentation\Unity Projects\Standard Assets Example Project.

Installing Unity on OS X from command line

Unity Editor install

Installs into folder /Applications/Unity on the specified target volume:

Installing several versions at once

You can install as many versions of Unity as you like on the same computer.

On a PC, the install folder is always named Unity X.Y.Z[fp]W, where the ‘f’ is for an official release, and ‘p’ is used to mark a patch release.

We strongly recommend that if you rename a Unity folder, you choose the new folder name logically (for example, add the version number to the end of the name). Note that any existing shortcuts, aliases and links to the offline docs may no longer point to the old version of Unity. This can be particularly confusing with the offline docs; if you suddenly find that browser bookmarks to the offline docs no longer work, then check that they have the right folder name in the URL.

Installing Unity from the command line

If you want to automate the deployment of Unity in an organization, you can install the Editor and other components from the command line. The components are normal installer executable programs and packages which you can use to automate the deployment of Unity.

To download the components, you use the Unity installer to download the Unity components to a folder on your computer.

Download and run the installer. Release versions of the installer are available from the Unity download archive. For pre-release versions of the installer, see the Beta programs page.

In Choose Components, select all of the components for which you are automating deployment.

In Choose Download and Install locations, click the Download to radio button.

Enter a location in which to store the component installers.

Finish the installation.

Navigate to the download location you specified. In the folder, you will find the installer files for the components you selected and a script file ( install.bat on Windows or install.sh on Linux or OS X) that you can run to install the components.

To install Unity on another computer using the downloaded components, copy the contents of the folder to the destination computer and execute the install script.

Installing individual Unity components on Windows from the command line

Use the following options when installing the Editor and other components from the command line on Windows.

Installing several versions at once

You can install multiple versions of Unity on the same computer.

On a Mac, the installer creates a folder called Unity, and overwrites any existing folder with this name. To install more than one version of Unity on your Mac, rename the existing Unity folder before installing another version.

Firebase Database 6.16.0 crashes Unity Editor on Install and on Play (with easy fix) #807

After installing Firebase Database version 6.16.0 using Unity Package Manager pressing Play in project which uses Firebase Database crashes the Unity Editor.
The Editor also did crash when installing Firebase Database through UPM

In the Unity Editor.Log I can see:
ERROR: Could not initialize persistence: Unable to find app data directory.

This seems to be causing the crash.

After looking at the Firebase Database C++ code I found out what was causing this error.
It’s quite obvious as the error message can be found in database/src/desktop/core/repo.cc
By looking at that file I saw the cause was relating to GetAppDataPath
On Mac GetAppDataPath seems to be finding the Application Support directory and appending the package_name to that if that folder exists.
It seems to be using package_name for the folder which is according to the xml converter created from the bundle_id.

In my case the bundle_id was: Is.Company.App

Which lead me to the conclusion that Firebase Database was looking for the folder path

That folder did not exists which explained the error.

I therefore created it and after that the Unity Editor ran without crashing and I saw data being created in a subfolder of the folder I just created and no error in Unity logs.

Steps to reproduce:

Install Firebase Database 6.16.0 through Unity Package Manager.

Firebase Database might fail on install.

Create scene and c# files which starts Firebase App.

Press Play and see if crash occurs.

If the Unity Editor crashes then open Unity Editor.Log and look for:
ERROR: Could not initialize persistence: Unable to find app data directory.

To fix for MacOS

For Firebase App with bundle id (package_name): Is.Company.App
Just create the folder:

To fix for Windows

For Firebase App with bundle id (package_name): Is.Company.App
Just create the folder: C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local\Is.Company.App
The folder is in path (see set) such as fx.:
LOCALAPPDATA=C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local

You might need to use upper or lowercase package_name. Just try according to your bundle_id or package_name stated in google-services.json

I did not help to downgrade to 6.15.2 and then install 6.16.0 again.
